Copper was an important factor to Eagle Harbor in the starting days of this town. There were no roads in this town, so boats were used for supplies, settlers, prospectors to get to the town. Boats were also used to shop copper out of the town. In 1851 a lighthouse was built on the rocky entrance to the harbor. In 1871 the lighthouse was rebuilt. Today the lighthouse still guides mariners across the northern edge of the Keweenaw Peninsula. You are able to go into the lighthouse in the months of mid-June to early October. Even when it’s not open to the public you still can go to the lighthouse and take pictures and walk around it if you would like.

A store that was originated in the early 1850’s is still standing today. Unfortunately the store is no longer open. The name of the store is “Foley Brother Store”. It sold general merchandise for the town. From 1872 to 1956 the town used the Eagle Harbor School house for the kids. As of right now, the town wants to restore the School House using donations. Once the School House is done, it will be used as a place for community gatherings.

There is a wide variety of things you can do in Eagle Harbor. If you love the snow and chilly weather be sure to visit Eagle Harbor in the winter. There are plenty of hilly trails for people to go cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling. These trails in the summer are good for people who love to go hiking or bike riding.

For family fun, get a boat or a canoe and go the Bailey Lake or another lake around the area. Bailey Lake is good place to go fishing, right along with the harbor. When you are at the harbor, there is a nice sandy beach for the kids to play in. The beach is located near the small marina.
